Medical Applications

Monitor equipped with wireless
technology (Source: Philips)
Information and communication technologies have become an essential part of the medical device industry. One significant innovation driving development is wireless transmission of  medical data. Getting rid of cables in intensive care areas increases safety and convenience, makes devices more robust against accidental damage, and ensures reliable data transmission even in challenging environments. Another  promising wireless application is the use of wide-area communications such as WLAN and GSM/UMTS in home care, rehabilitation, and ambient assisted living; this will save money, improve the effectiveness of health care, and enhance patient quality of life.

In partnership with such leading manufacturers of medical equipment as Philips and Smiths Medical Deutschland GmbH, IMST is developing wireless solutions using technologies like BluetoothTM  for applications that include intensive care units and home care. By working through each step--from feasibility studies to system design, hard- and software design, implementation, certification and documentation--we lead the way in  incorporating wireless technologies into existing medical products.

The goal of this research project was the development of a RF whole-body coil for Magnetic Resonance Imaging at 7 Tesla (T). One important feature of this whole-body coil is the absence of imaging artifacts caused by interference of the RF field used for spin excitation. Hereby it is possible to utilize the higher signal quality at 7 T and the corresponding better image quality in larger body regions like Thorax or Abdomen.
