IRIS – Intelligent Array with Integrated Steering

Funded by: DLR Space Agency, Bonn (BMWi)
Timeframe: 2007–2010
Project Reference: 50 YB 0707
Partner: Epak GmbH

Project goal: Development of an electronically steerable antenna for maritime Satcom. Existing mechanically steerable systems suffer from mechanical stress and have limited lifetimes. The IRIS antenna has no mechanically moving parts. The whole structure is robust and has a much longer mean time between failures (MTBF). Another important feature is the sphere-like aperture that allows excellent performance down to low elevation angles. The IRIS antenna will be deployed in satellite systems like Inmarsat BGAN or Thuraya.
